The Cambodia men’s national basketball team achieved its best ever result at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) held in Manila, Philippines, by winning the silver medal in the 5-on-5 competition and the gold medal in the 3×3 event. The team, which was composed of six naturalized players and six local players, surprised many observers with their impressive performance against regional rivals such as the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam. The team was coached by Harry Savaya, a former player of the Israeli national team, who took over the helm of the Cambodian Basketball Federation (CBF) in 2021.
The team’s success was not without controversy, however, as some critics questioned the eligibility and legitimacy of the naturalized players, who were mostly former college or professional players from the United States. According to the SEA Games rules, a player must have a passport of the country he or she represents and must have resided in that country for at least three years. The CBF claimed that all of its naturalized players met these criteria and had obtained Cambodian citizenship through various means, such as marriage, investment, or ancestry. The CBF also argued that naturalization was a common practice in international basketball and that Cambodia was only following the example of other countries that had done the same.
The naturalized players, for their part, expressed their gratitude and pride for being able to represent Cambodia on the international stage. They said that they had developed a strong bond with their local teammates and had learned a lot about the culture and history of Cambodia. They also said that they hoped to inspire more young Cambodians to take up basketball and to develop the sport in the country.
The local players, meanwhile, welcomed the addition of the naturalized players and praised their skills and leadership. They said that playing with them had improved their own game and confidence and that they had learned valuable lessons from them. They also said that they were proud of their achievement and that they had proven that Cambodia could compete with the best in Southeast Asia.
The CBF said that it was planning to build on the team’s success and to continue to develop basketball in Cambodia. It said that it would invest more resources and facilities for the sport and that it would scout more local and foreign talents for the national team. It also said that it would aim to qualify for bigger tournaments such as the FIBA Asia Cup and the Asian Games in the future.
